Lion City Sailors vs Bangkok United
The Lion City Sailors kickstart their second foray into the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League with an intriguing home clash against 2022-23 Thai League 1 runners-up Bangkok United.
With a squad brimming with pedigree in the likes of former Portugal youth captain Rui Pires, ex-Ajax Amsterdam forward Richairo Živković and several Singapore internationals, the Sailors will be looking to go one better after an encouraging maiden 2022 ACL voyage in which they achieved the best-ever points tally – seven – by a Singapore club in the competition’s group stage.
An opening victory will not come easy though as the visitors are one of the strongest club sides in Thailand, with the likes of Thai national players Thitiphan Puangchan, Pokklaw Anan, Manuel Bihr as well as Palestinian winger Mahmoud Eid and former Brazil Under-17 forward Willen Mota.
There will also be a familiar face on the sidelines for the Angels in Totchtawan Sripan, who used to play in the Singapore domestic league more than two decades ago. He will go up against a wily Sailors counterpart, Aleksandar Ranković, who used to coach in the Dutch Eredivisie and it is set to be an interesting tactical battle.
